Sharjah Police was established in 1967 by H.H. Sheikh Khalid Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi.
First, the force started as a local department affiliated to and directed by the Ruler of Sharjah.
In 1971 the Ministry of Interior of the United Arab Emirates was established. H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Federal Supreme Council, and Ruler of Sharjah issued a decree that all general security and police departments in Sharjah city have to follow the Ministry of Interior.
The General Directorate of Sharjah Police nowadays constitutes of several specialized departments in different security and police fields as well as referred units in addition to east region police directorate which consists of Korfakkan, Kalba, and Dibba Al Hisn in the East Coast. In 1995 in accordance to what has been submitted by Sharjah Police, the Cabinet has approved the decision No. (3)of the year 1995 to upgrade the Sharjah Police to be a general directorate to include nine departments , accordingly in 1996 Sharjah Police became Sharjah Police General Directorate by the Ministerial law No. 498 of the year 1996.
